The East Hawaii Hiroshima Kenjin Kai will host a Hiroshima peace memorial service at 1 p.m. today at the Hawaii Japanese Center.
This day and time was chosen to coincide with the approximate time in Hiroshima, Japan, when the atomic bomb was detonated Aug. 6, 1945.
The memorial service will be followed by the opening of the photographic exhibit titled, “Under the Mushroom Cloud,” which is comprised of 30 framed posters that capture the devastation wrought on Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the atomic bombs in 1945 and the human suffering that continued in the years that followed.
The Hawaii Japanese Center is located at 751 Kanoelehua Ave. in Hilo. The exhibition will remain open to the public from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday through Aug. 12.

The East Hawaii Hiroshima Kenjin Kai was established 1967 and incorporated as a nonprofit in 2007. Its primary purpose is to promote goodwill, friendship and mutual understanding among its members, to preserve the legacy of early Hiroshima immigrants to Hawaii, to uphold the high ideals of early immigrants, and to foster better relations with organizations and provide assistance in time of need.
